From Idea to Launching AI: A 5-Week Journey for Founders and Solo Builders (Part 1)

Most AI projects fail not because the models are inaccurate, but because they solve problems no one truly needs. The key is not to chase “AI,” but to focus on solving a painful, paid problem. Despite massive AI investments, 74% of companies see no real value because their solutions lack user adoption. The author’s own experience—six months and $40,000 spent on a predictive model that got zero customers—shows that technology alone doesn’t create business value. Using the PAIN framework (Paid, Automatable, Input/Output, Necessary) helps filter ideas to ensure real demand and feasibility. Start simple: use rules or pre-trained APIs before jumping into custom models. Tie AI directly to business outcomes like churn or gross margin, and track how performance leads to adoption and measurable impact. Build systems, not just models—combine rules, AI, UX, and feedback loops for hybrid intelligence where humans handle edge cases. Gather quality data from day one, validate in real user environments, and prioritize time-to-value over perfection. Ultimately, “boring and valuable beats brilliant and brittle.” Before writing any code, have three user conversations and run your idea through PAIN.
